Update: Graduate Student Convicted For Battery

Editors Note: On Aug. 18, 2017, the misdemeanor charge of battery was dismissed and the record expunged.

In the article โ€œUpdate: student arrested for criminal threats and battery,โ€ published on May 6, the Echo reported that graduate student Kiran Reddy Paidi was arrested at California Lutheran University on April 22 on suspicion of criminal threats and battery.

On May 20, Paidi pleaded guilty for the battery charge, California Penal Code 242, whereas the criminal threats charge, California Penal Code 422 was dismissed at the Ventura County Superior Court.

According to the docket information description on the Superior Court of California โ€“ County of Ventura website, Paidi was ordered โ€œto serve 20 day(s) with credit for 0 day(s) actual time served in the Ventura County Jail.โ€

The docket information also stated that โ€œthe court has released [Paidi] on Conditional Revocable Release for 36 months,โ€ and a work release was approved. The work release is in place of actual jail time, and is to be completed by Sept. 21, 2015.

According to the California Legislative Information website, California Penal Code 242 states โ€œa battery is any willful or unlawful use of force or violence on the person of another.โ€

The docket information also said โ€œthe defendant was advised: If you are not a citizen, you are hereby advised that conviction of the offense for which you have been charged may have the consequences of deportation, exclusion from admission to the United States, or denial of naturalization pursuant to the laws of the United States.”

The Echo reached out to Paidi for a statement, but he did not comment.
