𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚 𝐂𝐥𝐮𝐛 𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐢 𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

California Lutheran University’s India Club and the Center of Global Engagement celebrated their annual Holi Celebration on March 26 at Kingsmen Park as part of the International Students and Scholars series.

Holi originates from India and is a festival to rejoice and celebrate the arrival of spring.
Attendees threw colored dust explosions at each other, danced to Hindi music, tie-dyed, and ate traditional Indian cuisine.

“Most of us are international students, we’re in a country where we don’t know a lot of people. I hope that they have found a family away from home, a home away from home. I hope they felt that love today that they do at home. I hope they feel maybe a percentage of the happiness that they feel at home when they play this or these games are celebrated,” India Club President Avya Pandhi said.

After several weather delays, the turf field within California Lutheran University’s William Rolland Stadium is now scheduled to be completed on April 19, 2024 as opposed to its anticipated completion date of Jan. 15, 2024.

William Rolland Stadium is Cal Lutheran’s two-story stadium that consists of 2,000 seats, and an artificial turf field that has been utilized for outdoor sports for the past 12 years.

FieldTurf, the company performing the construction on the turf field, said it is expected that turf fields should be replaced every 8-10 years to ensure proper performance and safety.

On Friday, March 22 California Lutheran University Faculty received an email announcing the upcoming launch of a textbook accessibility program known as BookPass.

The program does not launch until the fall 2024 semester, however, there is now information available for both faculty and students of Cal Lutheran located online.

In the email, the program’s aim is said to increase textbook affordability and convenience factors for students. Instead of students trying to find access to their textbooks and navigate financial preparation for purchasing or renting, they will pay a flat $210 fee and automatically receive access to the books they need. The BookPass webpage on Cal Lutheran’s website claims this will save students upwards of thirty to fifty percent on textbook costs.

The Disability Advocacy Student Association, a new club at California Lutheran University, is currently in the process of getting approved. The association aims to welcome and cultivate a space for students with disabilities and disability allies.

Emma Blanck, junior and DASA president, said DASA is a space where students with disabilities and allies can make a community and build connections on campus.

“Even if it’s something that you’ve never been interested in before and know anything about, I would really encourage [students] to come and see,” Blanck said. “I think a lot of people have an image in their mind of what disability looks like, but it’s really broad and there’s a huge spectrum and it can present itself in so many different ways.”

𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 “𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐰𝐚𝐲” 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐩𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝

The plan to turn Memorial Parkway into a pedestrian-only zone is still being pursued by California Lutheran University, yet, a timeline on the final product is still unknown.

Associate Vice President of Planning and Operations Ryan Van Ommeren said the project was first planned in the 1990s, and would see the closure of Memorial Parkway to vehicle traffic, making the crossing area outside of Ullman Commons a pedestrian-only area. This closure would look to connect to the spine to the north side of campus.

Van Ommeren said Memorial Parkway is as an awkward division between the two sides of campus, and that a pedestrian-only zone would create a better connection between the north and south areas.

As tennis season heats up, California Lutheran University battled Colorado College at the Poulson Tennis Courts on Sunday afternoon. The Kingsmen fell 6-3 to the Tigers.

Cal Lutheran trailed Colorado College 2-1 following the conclusion of the doubles matches. Sophomore Ethan Sherwood and junior Loup Sudre were able to secure the win in the number one spot, winning 8-5. The number two doubles squad of junior Andy Ai and first-year James Truong held the lead for the first part of the match, but were defeated in the tiebreaker, 7-8.

Head Men’s and Women’s Tennis Coach Mike Gennette emphasized the strength of the number one doubles team and the growing strength of the number two squad.

Marzo es el mes de la historia de la mujer. Durante este tiempo, las mujeres son reconocidas por las contribuciones que han hecho a la sociedad y a la historia.

Sin embargo, la estudiante de segundo año y jugadora de cuadro para el equipo de sofbol de la Universidad Luterana de California, Nadia Monteil, dijo que existe una escasez de representación de la mujer. Monteil dijo que esta escasez es predominante entre las mujeres latinas que practican deportes.

“I think there definitely needs to be more uplifting of Latina women’s sports, because I think it’s not really celebrated and uplifted. And there’s a big lack, especially in Division I and professional sports,” Montiel dijo.

On Tuesday, Feb. 20, California Lutheran University’s Film and Television Department hosted the first annual Black, Indigenous and People of Color Film and TV Summit with industry panelists in honor of Black History Month at 5 p.m. in Richter Hall.
Associate Professor and Chair of the Film and Television Department, John Fitch III kicked off the event by introducing the three guest panelists including their past and current positions.
Of the three panelists, Producer Ashley Gasper talked about how she is also an assistant director and production coordinator. Her credits include Sweetwater, Black-ish, Stuber and The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial.

On the evening of Feb. 21, current California Lutheran University students, faculty and local community members were invited to Samuelson Chapel to hear a presentation from Academic and Animal Behaviorist Temple Grandin, about different types of thinking.

Grandin is a current professor and researcher at Colorado State University, a prominent advocate and developer for the humane treatment of livestock for slaughter, and an Autism spectrum activist. She is also a New York Times best-selling author, and in 2010 was a part of TIME Magazine’s Top 100 Most Influential People in the World list.

This presentation was a part of the dean’s lecture series and served as the kickoff for Disability Awareness Month. Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Tim Hengst set up the lecture, and Cal Lutheran’s Autism and Communication Center sponsored the event.

The California Lutheran University women’s water polo team started off the Tina Finali Tournament with a heartbreaking 15-14 defeat in overtime against Ottawa University on Friday.

The score went back and forth throughout the whole game with both teams fighting hard to try and gain the lead. With less than a second left in the fourth quarter, senior driver Megan Findlay managed to find the back of the net and bring the game into overtime with a score of 11-11.

The teams kept it tight until the end but Ottawa managed to take home the victory by outsourcing the Regals 4-3 in overtime, winning the game with a final score of 15-14.

For the first time ever, the California Lutheran University Kingsmen and Regals basketball teams both finished as regular season Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champions in the same year.

On Saturday, Feb. 17, the Kingsmen and Regals basketball teams ended their regular season with wins as they celebrated senior day in Gilbert Arena at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
The Regals celebrated senior small forward Grace Godines and senior center Aliya DiMuro.

I believe that raves, music festivals, and similar events can be the most fulfilling and worthwhile things you can do for yourself, and you should not let the negative stereotypes stray you away from experiencing them.

These events happen all year round and I believe we should start breaking the negative stigmas associated with raves and music festivals to allow for more individuals to have the opportunity to attend them without fear or worry.

“I would absolutely recommend whoever, especially people who are going through a really tough time in life, just to give it a chance,” rave attendee and harm reduction volunteer LaFrance Daniels III said.

California Lutheran University’s women’s basketball team secured the top spot in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament with their 102-84 victory over the formerly number 1-ranked Occidental College Tigers on Feb. 7.

In their last matchup against the Tigers on Jan. 3 at Occidental College, the Regals lost a close contest, dropping the game 81-85.

“We were not gonna lose to Oxi a second time. This time it was gonna be different, we were gonna beat them no matter what,” first-year forward Alline Ballard said.

I believe that California Lutheran University should implement a policy allowing students to take between 1-4 mental health days per course.

Mental health days are essential to everyone, especially college students. Since COVID-19 hit the world in 2020, I feel like my world has slightly shifted off its axis. Fortunately, as a society, we are beginning to prioritize things we had not before, such as mental health.

“In the context of the pandemic and climate change, there are all kinds of reasons why mental health is becoming more important and more visible to us,” English Professor Bryan Rasmussen said.

Durante su tiempo en la Universidad Luterana de California, el Consejero de Éxito Estudiantil, Ulises Castro, desempeñó varios roles que aportan beneficios a la universidad. Desde Phoenix, Arizona a Thousand Oaks, California, Castro ha recorrido comunidades donde el ha formado parte de impactos positivos.

Durante su licenciatura, Castro participó en distintas actividades como guía turístico de la universidad y como jugador de fútbol americano. Castro también fue el responsable de crear el club ‘Together We Dream,’ que hasta hoy en día sigue apoyando a estudiantes bajo Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA) y estudiantes indocumentados.

Después de graduarse de Cal Luterana, Castro empezó a trabajar para la oficina de admisiones en Cal Luterana como estudiante, donde tuvo la oportunidad de ver cómo era el proceso de reclutar de estudiantes en la universidad.

On Thursday, Feb. 8 California Lutheran University’s Career Services and Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) hosted the Careers in Communication Speaker Panel.

The panel took place at 4:00 p.m. at the Ullman Commons 100 and 101 and consisted of three speakers, all of whom are Cal Lutheran alumnae.

Each speaker talked about what their job entails and their journey of how they got to where they are now. They also shared what they considered to be the positives and negatives of their current positions.

Men’s soccer continues hotstreak

Junior forward Kyle Fleming scored the lone goal at William Rolland Stadium as the Kingsmen remained undefeated in SCIAC play. CLU beat University of Redlands by a score of 1-0. This win was their sixth consecutive non-defeat and brought their overall record to 5-1-1 and 3-0-1 in SCIAC play. This is the best start to a season for the Kingsmen since 2005 when they started the season 5-0-2 in their first seven games.
